Puerto Vallarta isn't near as much fun as I thought it might be. First off, the $2/person taxi ride to downtown turned into a $5/person tour without asking us. Rather than fight over it, I just paid. But I didn't appreciate it much. Downtown has plenty of places to shop, but there didn't seem to be any bargains. Even the leather coats at the recommended shop were more than at Sam's Club back home.
We didn't make it to Senor Frog's but the No Name Cafe had some excellent deep dish pizza. We stopped in one place that sold stuff to benefit an ecological group, and they had a notebook with photos of area attractions. Turns out there's a neat place called Eden that offers a waterfall park with swimming and a rope swing that looked pretty neat. It's about 20 miles from the dock so they said renting a car would be cheaper than taxis. I'll keep it in mind in case I ever come back here again.
I was able to check my email in a little Internet shop (one guy with 4 PCs) in the flea market right by the dock at a very reasonable rate (I think about 20 minutes cost me 2 dollars). I didn't even notice until about halfway through that the operating system was in Spanish.
I've been surprised by a few things that go counter to what I've read on other reviews on the net. One is the room size, mentioned above. One is the fact that the bathrooms _do_ come with shampoo, razors, and Tylenol - all the other reviews that mentioned it said only soap was provided. Another thing that I wouldn't have expected is the number of things that don't work. Of the two glass elevators in the atrium, one seems to be out of commission most of the time. I've seen water fountains marked Out Of Order, and the water slide is only open for a few hours a day. There didn't seem to be anyone running up as we moved away from the dock. We finally had a deck party after leaving the dock, and it was still underway at 12:30 am when we crashed.
