Day One - Half Moon Key

Half Moon Key, Holland America's private island, was actually very nice. The main beach is huge - I walked at least a mile up it and doubt I got more than one-third of the way across. Like cruise line's private islands everywhere, there was plenty of food and watersports to be had. The parasailing seemed to have continuous customers, and the SCUBA diving filled up moments after the tours went on sale.

The island also has a lagoon, which is used for kayaking. If the regular beach was too crowded or boring, there was a nice raw beach less than a five-minute walk from the tender dock.

The water was, in my mind, surprisingly warm for November - the ship's display gave the water temperature as 27 degrees Celsius, which chilled me a bit momentarily but wasn't too bad at all.
