Day One - Nassau

We got to Nassau fairly early - we were ready to debark before the shops in town were open. We didn't take any shore excursions in Nassau - the ship was only docked five hours and the shore excursions didn't have anything exceptional. We were the first ship to arrive, and it rained moments before we docked. However, the sun came out and turned everything from dark and damp to bright and muggy.

Our first target was to walk to the Queen's Staircase - a slot cut in the rock allowing an escape path for soldiers in the fort. This slot turned out to be around thirty feet wide by a hundred feet deep by several hundred feet long. One of the local tour guides stated that it was built over a 16-year period by 600 slaves.

After climbing the Queen's Staircase out of the slot in the rock, we found ourselves atop the tallest point on the island. Given that this was maybe 150 feet tall, there wasn't much of a view.

We visited two other attractions in Nassau. The first was the Pirate's Museum. This museum was pretty good - it had a lot of pirate's artifacts (including swords and guns), plus included a lot of background information about their lifestyle. The other place we stopped at on our way back to the ship was the straw market. This market was a major centerpiece in Nassau's waterfront district, but it caught fire and burned down several weeks before we arrived. Until it can be rebuilt, all the merchants have been crammed into a temporary structure.
